Visit the Snow

Winter in Melbourne is a wonderful time to experience the snow ... not actually in Melbourne, but there are a number of snowfields that are within a few hours drive of the CBD and can easily be reached on a day trip. If you don't have a car there are several of our excellent Tour Companies that offer Day Tours to the snow.

The closest snowfields to Melbourne and ideal for a day trip, especially if you have never been to the snow before. Lake Mountain has its own snow making equipment so there is always snow on the two toboggan runs and seperate snow play areas - perfect for just throwing snowballs or building a snowman. The best part is that you drive right up to the snowline - no need to transfer buses. If you're interested in exploring further you can always hire a pair of snowshoes and go exploring along some of the nordic trails. Of course you can always ski too!

Our very good friends at Wildlife Tours offer a Day Tour to Lake Mountain during the winter months - 11 June - 09 September. The tour departs daily and is a day packed with adventure and fun - the bus will pick you up from the hotel and drive you the 120 kms to Lake Mountain - where there is actually no lake but a mountain instead - named after Surveyor-General George Lake.

You will have ample time to enjoy the quaint, picture-perfect chalets overlooking the mountains. Surrounded by miles of cross-country ski tracks and toboggan fields, the resort is equipped with modern facilities. Facilities include a bistro and day shelter, a cafe, ski equipment, retail shop, snow sports centre, ski school, and more. You will have a total of 3 hours at the snow.

After enjoying the snow there is a short drive to Marysville where you will stop and take a short 700-metre walk to the spectacular and awe-inspiring Steavenson Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in Victoria. After that you will return home through the beautiful Yarra Valley where you will have time to indulge your sweet tooth at Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice-creamery. Enjoy free samples of their handcrafted chocolate products and sweet treats. You can also shop and bring home some goodies.

If you're keen to explore the snowfields while you are in Melbourne there are plenty of options for you. Lake Mountain is the best for a day trip to explore and have fun in the snow - if you would like to ski pr snowboard you can go a little further into the Victorian Alpine Region and explore Mount Buffalo or Falls Creek. The Victorian snow season can be a little inconsistent so always check on the snow conditions before you go - this year (2019) the snow season is off to an early start with snow around very early. Remember that alpine conditions can change very quickly so always be prepared.
