Myer Christmas Windows
Each November, the unveiling of the annual Myer Christmas windows signals the start of the Festive Season in Melbourne. For generations, families have
made the trip into town to gaze at the miniature make-believe worlds behind the glass, in what has for many become a beloved and unmissable tradition.
They were the brainchild of Fred Asmussen, who had been in charge of dressing the Bourke Street windows from 1939. The windows have an appeal across generations, as parents and grandparents, remembering trips to the windows in their childhood, continue the tradition with their own children. Bringing to life popular stories and Christmas themes through the use of innovative lighting, costumes and mechanisation. Asmussen's last window was The Butterfly Ball in 1974.
In 1939 the theme was, of course, Santa and the Olympics, in 1967 the theme was Chinese Fairy Tales and in 1995 it was Mag Gibbs and the Gumnut Babies. The theme for 2019 is based on the Gumnut Babies the illustrated works of famous Australian Author May Gibbs.
If you would like to arrange some one on one time with Santa it can be done - you can reserve some time in advance with the very busy man himself at Santa Land in the Myer Bourke Street store. Santa will be at the store : Sun - Wed - 0900 - 1900 hrs and Thur to Sat - 0900 - 2100 hrs
